The other day Daniel pointed out that we have paid $25,000 in rent at our current apartment. I am fairly certain that's about 25% of the value of our apartment. So maybe I should claim that over the last 3 1/2 years we have paid off a quarter of a mortgage (just not our own mortgage).

All the money that I've paid into rent sort of makes me sick to my stomach.
You also have to taken into consideration that because of the rotten housing market the past few year, had you bought a house/condo 3 1/2 years ago it is very likely that it would have lost at least that much value by this point. If that makes you feel any better. . .
That makes me a little sick to think about!
