Juan Familia en Mexico

Daniel and I can no longer fully relate to James Taylor's "Mexico" with the deep feeling we used to. We have really been, but we would sure like to go (again). The whole John family flew into Cancun for what I will boldly name the first ever John Family Reunion.

The House
We stayed in a gorgeous house in Playa del Carmen. It was about a mile from downtown "Playa" and lived up to all its hype. It had plenty of room, great AC, comfortable beds, and lots of things to do.

The pool after a day of playing "don't hit the beach ball down into the cenote with the turtles". Daniel kept picking up the turtles and saying he was going to put them on me. Oh, so scary.
The semi-circle shaped window is the room we slept in. It had great vaulted ceilings, a walk-in closet, and a huge bathroom.

TULUM
Tulum was about an hour away from the house. The setting was amazing with the ruins overlooking the beach. Even the Mayans knew prime real estate when they saw it.

XEL-HA
This is an eco water park. We snorkeled, floated on tubes, cliff jumped, swam, ate (a lot!), and generally had a good time. We had an encounter with what I am convinced was a huge mean fish who wanted to eat me. He was swimming at the surface of the water right by us and he did not move when we got close. This was probably our favorite day but we don't have any pictures yet because we only used the underwater disposable camera. If there are any good ones you can be sure we'll share.

CHICHEN ITZA
These ruins were about 3 hours away from the house so we left early one morning to beat the heat and the tourists.
Seriously, how did they do it? Four square miles of amazing stone structures.Just to give you an idea how big they are. And no, we didn't climb up the stairs. Tourists are not allowed on the ruins anymore.

DOWNTOWN PLAYA DEL CARMEN
We had a great dinner right on the beach. The setting, the food, and the company were awesome.


OUR BEACH
There was a beach resort we thought we would go to, but this small beach right by the house was perfect for our needs. The white sand was the softest ever. I love swimming in Caribbean water! Though it was a bit salty so we were sticky when we got out. We would walk back home and jump in the pool the rinse off.

We dragged chairs, boogie boards, noodles, and a floating chair from the house and had a great time.

THE VAN
We rented this awesome 12 passenger van. Perhaps the most exciting news of the trip is that my dad did not get pulled over!

As you can see, it was probably the best trip we can ever hope to go on. Believe it or not, I DO have more pictures if you want to see them.

Texas Trip

I am finally getting to our trip to Texas. We did get back about a month ago, but it was a great trip and it deserves a post. WARNING: ANOTHER LONG POST

THE DRIVE

We drove 21 hours straight from Utah to Texas with Carolyn Nielson the First and Whitney.

Ok so Daniel did some driving, I just rode (Yup, that is me sleeping on my own lap. My legs were numb for hours after that.) Daniel took a ton of random pictures along the way, like the one below, but I must have slept through the inside jokes that go along with them. He can make a post with the 25 pictures he took of things by the side of the road.

One thing that definitely needs to be addressed? The smells by the New Mexico-Texas border. I don't think I breathed through my nose for at least an hour.

THE GUADALUPE
We stayed at a great house down on the Guadalupe River for a few days. The house had everything:

a rope swing into the river,
great hair,
great scenery, a floating dock to lay out on, (the Carolyn Nielsons had their stuff kayaked to them)
amazing food,
the after math of one of our delicious dinners was all I got a picture of

Other things not pictured include a community pool, comfortable beds, and a great/dangerous rock for doing group cannonballs off of. We were never bored.

BARTON SPRINGS
Since we hadn't had enough swimming, we went to Barton Springs, a watering hole in Austin that was formed when Barton Creek was dammed. The water is cold and, well, nature-y. I couldn't help but voice my disdain as clumps of a moss-like substance touched me.


RAY WYLIE HUBBARD CONCERT/TEXAS HISTORY MUSEUM

Daniel found out about a free Ray Wylie Hubbard concert in downtown Austin by the Texas History Museum. We toured the museum for a little while and then relaxed on the grass while Mr. Hubbard presented his vocal stylings. The concert brought out the most diverse of crowds like only a free concert can do. (Well except for maybe a free concert in Utah)
It was a surprisingly small crowd.
It only took about 10 minutes to get this picture right.

MIGHTY FINE
We tried out this new hamburger place. It was quite the event. Mighty Fine did not disappoint. The fries were my favorite.

On top of great food, they had a hand washing machine. I did it twice. Look at my triceps.

DRIVING RANGE
The Nielson men headed over the driving range while the women attended Mama Mia!


Other trip highlights include seeing The Dark Knight at midnight in the front row, eating at great restaurants, having diet coke with fresh lime at Chuy's (it's the best-especially when served by a waiter named Miami), watching two seasons of Arrested Development, getting free muffins from Mimi's Cafe, and attempting to play tennis multiple times. Thanks for making it all possible Nielson parents!

3 Years!!!!!

Well I can't believe I am saying this already, but it was 3 years ago today that Carly became the biggest sucker in the history of the world because for some reason she married me. I might be the luckiest person alive to have been able to trick Carly into marrying me. I really did literally trick her because I didn't propose in any kind of traditional way. I simply got off of work late one night went over to her apartment and had her roomies let me in so I could go put the ring on her finger while she was asleep and then get outta there before she realized. See she had no choice because by accepting the ring it counted as a yes in my book.

Anyways I can't believe she went through with it, but it has been a great 3 years. We have had a lot of laughs, fights, watched numerous sporting events, learned that I am always wrong, and pretty much just have had fun. I am very lucky to be married to a beautiful woman who makes me a better person. Carly is perfect for me and I don't know what I would do without her (I would probably be eating out of dumpsters and still wearing my clothes from high school).

I can't wait for the years to come because these last three have been so good. Maybe during one of these years I will be right in an argument and it will be a miracle. Carly I love you very much and please don't realize that you married a huge dork.



Besides how could you not love someone who would pose like this to make another couple uncomfortable.

First Things First

I realize many of you are anxiously awaiting posts about our trips to Texas and Cancun, but I will first address the significance of today's date: the third anniversary of our marriage. Don't worry, I won't do the typical boring post about how amazing our marriage is or how my husband is the best guy in the world. Nope, today I am going to take the opportunity to tell Daniel, and the blorld (blog world) the things I DON'T like about him.

TOP 5 THINGS DANIEL NEEDS TO IMPROVE IN ORDER TO STAY MARRIED TO ME:

1. Athleticism- He's just not that good at sports. As you can see from the pictures, he is constantly playing on teams that come in second place (or worse!).If he is going to keep my heart he's got to start winning, or at least coming in first. Like me! (See picture of my softball championship team) Perhaps Daniel could make up for his lack of athleticism with a ridiculous knowledge of sports. If he could tell me where every NBA player ever went to college and the school's mascot I may let the unathleticism slide.

2. Competitiveness- Maybe if he just had a competitive drive Daniel would be better at sports. I am a little worried our future children won't take athletics seriously enough if they spend much time with their father. I'll probably have to coach their teams!
3. The nag factor- Daniel constantly nags me! Either that or he corrects me when I tell any detail of a story slightly wrong. He tries to tell me what I should or shouldn't do constantly. (Special thanks to Whitney for capturing this moment)
4. Sense of humor- Daniel=not funny. Sometimes I wonder, "When is this guy going to lighten up?" He needs to learn to take a joke and even make people laugh once in a while. Life isn't meant to be so serious Danielson.






5. Spending habits- Talk about extravagant! You see the swimsuit he is wearing in this picture? $14!! Yeah, I guess a bathing suit is useful in Mexico. Useful, not necessary.

So, just to recap, the type of man I want is athletic, competitive, funny, and cheap. Feel free to remind Daniel of the areas he needs to improve in order to make me happy. Maybe we'll make it a few more years.

But I do really look up to Daniel. Of course I do! He's a foot taller than me.

Live from CVG

Now I know you are wondering what the heck CVG is, well let me tell you because for the next few hours it is my home. CVG is the code for Cincinnati airport and I get the fantastic opportunity of staying here until my next flight of my trek to Cancun. Here are the pluses and minuses of my situation at the moment.

Pluses-
Right now I essentially have the place to myself which is great because I don't have to carry my bags all over the place if I want to walk around for a minute. And if my bags do go missing then they would be pretty easy to find considering that either one of the three janitors walking about or the other guy who appears to be sharing my plight would have to be the people that took them.

Unlike at our apartment I was able to find free internet here in the airport. I am not sure how, but I was able to avoid the 15 bucks that the t mobile hot spot was trying to charge. So take that t mobile.

If I begin to smell (which is very possible) then no one is around to complain about it, unless the janitors have a keen sense of smell.

CNN is on 24/7 which means I am catching up on all the fantastic jabs that our potential future presidents are taking at each other. How about they work together to help the country actually move in a better direction instead of worrying about resumes and who is a hero and who isn't. Politics are really annoying. There is an interesting show on the Dali Lama so I got that going for me.

Minuses-
I am starving and there is not a food place open in the whole joint. How do I know? I know because I asked my friend Raul the janitor mere moments ago and to put it simply I would think Raul knows what hes talking about when it comes to finding food.

I may get into a fight with my friend who appears to be sharing my same situation (unless he is a janitor who carries around luggage) if we both need to charge our computers. I say this because it seems that there is exactly one outlet in the entire terminal and I refuse to let this computer die because without it I might go crazy and have to build a fort out of all of these chairs. Maybe my friend would want to help.

Now I know I said CNN is a plus, but it might become a negative since it just loops and repeats itself over and over. Besides why can't they break the rules once and just turn it to ESPN.

Well that's all I have for now, but if any of you read this soon, or I guess ever, go ahead and give me some ideas for good activities to kill time. Seriously do it...please.
