The week after Thanksgiving I joined Daniel and his team in Hawaii for a tournament. The difference this year from last is we went to a new tournament on a different island. Last year they hosted a tournament at BYU-Hawaii, on Oahu. We stayed right by the campus at a Marriott that was fine. Pretty much everything in Hawaii is beautiful and by the ocean, so you can't go wrong. However, this year the tournament was hosted by Oregon State on Maui and we stayed at the Grand Wailea, which is a beautiful resort.
Looking forward to this Hawaii trip got me mentally through those first 8 weeks of pregnancy nausea. We left right as I hit the 12 week mark and I was really hoping the nausea would be completely gone. While it was still sticking around, it was definitely rapidly improving. The flights to Maui were the worst sickness-wise, but I felt mostly ok once we we arrived. Also, nausea is a lot more manageable when you don't have any life responsibilities. No kids, no cleaning up, no cooking. Just relaxing and watching a couple basketball games.
When we arrived at the hotel on day 1 it was dark, so we were treated to some amazing views first thing in the morning.
While Daniel went to practice I walked around the resort and took pictures of the grounds and the beach just beyond the pools. There are all these different pools, hot tubs and water slides at the resort. I kept thinking about how much my girls would love it there. But then I realize it isn't worth it to fly to Hawaii for the pools at a resort.
After practice on day 2 we went snorkeling with the whole group. I almost didn't go because I was worried about potential double nausea from pregnancy and seasickness. I am so glad I did, because I felt fine. The boat brought us out to a cove that is supposed to have extra great snorkeling. We saw lots of beautiful fish. I was the first to spot a huge sea turtle, which made me feel like the coolest person around, for 5 minutes.
The boat ride was incredibly windy and our attempts at pictures were sad. This is the best one, by a long shot.
I managed to go running one morning. That was my first run in several weeks. I mostly felt....jiggly. I have never run while pregnant so with each later week that I run it feels weirder. I opted to go walking every other morning, which was much more enjoyable and allowed for easy photo ops.
The Grand Wailea is right on the beach, which has a path that winds along the coast behind many other resorts and condos. Most mornings I walked with Denise Stewart, Ray's wife, who is one of my favorite people in the world. The views were unbelievable.
BYU played UNLV first, who was a pretty good team. When Daniel set up the schedule to play them last year he didn't realize how good they would be. BYU pulled out the win, which was awesome.
I spent the rest of my free time by the pool or beach- reading, sleeping, or talking to other BYU staff wives.
One day Daniel came down to the beach for about 15 minutes as the sun set. The setting just begged for pictures.
The next game was against Oregon State. They are very, very good. Daniel felt optimistic because they line up well against the Beavers. BYU didn't play very well offensively, but kept it close. They were down by 2 with a few minutes left, but ended up losing by around 10 because of fouling to stop the clock. I took no pictures because I was too stressed out.
Our red-eye flight took off a few hours after the game ended, which was kind of a mess. There are no restaurants in the Maui airport so we needed to stop somewhere. The McDonald's we chose took forever so we had to leave before most people got their food. At the airport the security line was crazy long. We waited anxiously as our flight got closer and closer to taking off and we were still in line. All the BYU coaches have priority boarding so they were already through. About 5 minutes before takeoff we all just cut the whole line and the Hawaiian TSA agents let us. Apparently they thought someone in authority had instructed us to do it, so we all got through. We were running through the airport, a la Home Alone, but we all made it.
And just like that, it was back to reality.
